New X1 Ship Designs
-
It is possible to research new X1 ship types- both base hulls (ex: DNX), and mission specialists (ex: CAX based scout).
-
X ships may have special crew (this overrides SFB's rules that they can not)
-
An X ship created for GC will always have more crew than the non-X version, and a specialist X1 type (ex: scout) will always have more crew than the X1 base hull.
-
X versions of BB (BBX), BBL (BBLX), DN/DNH (DNX), DNL (DLX), and BCH (BCHX) may all be researched. Note that in order to have an X tech version of a base hull, you must have the non-X version of that base hull.
-
Some empires may have a DLX which is listed as "IMP" (impossible) in the G3 ship status column. These ships must be developed before they can be built (i.e. treat impossible status in the same manner one would treat conjectural).
-
If there is a published X1 DLX, DNX, etc. use the crew, BPV, and other details from that source. If it is an unpublished version, the GM will tell you what the numbers are once the project completes.
-
X1 tech escorts for X1 CVs may be researched. Unlike non-X tech, X1 escorts can only be used if the empire has CEFO-I/II/III techs.
-
X1 tech ships are limited to a command rating of 10 (BBX, DNX, etc.)
-
For empires with multiple DN, CA, BC, etc. hull types, you need to research each one if you want all the types to be X-capable. The Klingons would need to research C8X and C9X (or just go with C10X), for example.
-
X1 "patrol" class ships (DN and BB hulls only) for all empires may be researched. These units have 12xPFs, no fighters, 2 more crew units than the DNX/BBX design. They are escorted by X1 escorts (use X1 versions of the SDS/SCS hull's escorts).
-
ICR-X-III (extra SC2 X conversion) is NOT available.
-
X1 ships always move at speed 4 (subject to crew quality adjustments), even if D1.10 would make them faster or slower. There are no "fast" X ships.
Generic X1 Ship Details
Costs, Crew, and YIS Dates
Larger X ships are even more expensive than as listed in C19.10 (+20%). Count converting or building SC2 hulls against the SC3 limits.
-
BBX: Production cost (build or convert) is +40% instead of the +20% of C19.10; +15 crew units (from BBH if one exists, otherwise BB); Y190 YIS
-
BBLX: Production cost (build or convert) is +40% instead of the +20% of C19.10; +15 crew units; Y190 YIS
-
DNX: Production cost (build or convert) is +30% instead of the +20% of C19.10; +12 crew units (from DNH if one exists, otherwise DN); YIS Y187
-
DLX: Production cost (build or convert) is +30% instead of the +20% of C19.10; +10 crew units; YIS Y182
-
BCHX: Production cost (build or convert) is +25% instead of the +20% of C19.10; +10 crew units; YIS 3 years after the empire's CCX
Note that the BCHX is an X tech version of an empire's heavy battle cruiser (with a command rating of 10, and larger than their NCA/CA/BC class). Some empires have a heavy battle cruiser that is listed as a BC. Some empires have a BC which is their alternative name for their heavy cruiser and not a BCH. At least a one empire has a BCH in all but name that has a command rating of 9 instead of 10.
Note that the YIS dates above assume conventional X1 YIS dates of the early Y180s. None of the new X1 types above is available before the empire can build SC3X hulls.
Stacking
-
Maximum of one CCX in a squadron. Note that this is the command rating 10 heavy cruiser. Some empires have a BCX which is their X tech heavy cruiser alternative.
-
Maximum of one BCHX in a squadron. Note that this is the command rating 10 heavy battle cruiser. Some empires have a BCX which is their X tech heavy cruiser alternative.
-
Maximum of one DNX/DNLX in a squadron (it counts as a CAX)
-
Maximum of one BBX/BBLX in a squadron (it counts as both a CAX and one SC4X hull)
-
Maximum of one X tech "true" carrier per squadron (CSVX, BBVX, etc). A SDS, SCS, BCS, or "patrol" ship (see above) is considered a carrier for this limit.
- You may combine all of these in one squadron (ex: BBX, DNX, BCHX, CCX, additional SC4 X ships to command rating limits). Basically, the X hulls are treated like their non-X types for purposes of "command ship" stacking (see D6.40).
X1 CVs and Escorts
-
X escorts may be built, but have to be researched first. Each type (FFEX, DWEX, ...) has to be researched independently.
-
Empires may research new types of X CVs. The base X hull must be available first (ex: CAX, BBX).
-
X CVs may replace their historical escorts with an X version of that type (or similar)
-
X CVs may use CEFO tech (and escorts may use IA tech)
-
X CV (based upon a CA, BC, NCA, or similar hull): YIS +3 years after CAX; if not published you'll have to R&D them.
-
SC2 X1 carriers, SDS/SCS, and "patrol" designs: YIS +3 years after the underlying base hull (so a SCSX would be Y190, while a SDSX would be Y193).
- CSV-X hulls are treated as CSV's for produciton cost purposes.
-
X CVs must have escorts and suffers the penalizes listed in (C20.70) if it does not. The SFB rules list escorts for X CVs
-
X CVs of a new type are expected to have escorts similar to the non-X version's.
-
X CVs in an elite X squadron (C19.40) would need X escorts, and CEFO-I,II,III.
Example: The UFP wants to upgrade their CVAs to X tech. They would need several projects:
- DNX. Once completed the hull would only be available in Y187 and later.
- CVAX. This design would be available in Y190.
- NAEX. This is their heavy escort.
- DWAX. This is another escort.
Assume some "brilliant" Gorn cost cutting bean counters find that the UFP has a handful of OCA's and decide to use the already paid for hulls for X escorts instead of the NAEX:
- DNX. Once completed the hull would only be available in Y187 and later.
- CVAX. This design would be available in Y190.
- OCAE. This is the escort version of the OCA.
- OCAX. This is the X tech version of the OCA.
- OCAEX. This is their heavy escort.
- DWAX. This is another escort.
As the above examples show, new X CV types require some forethought as the R&D costs (and delays) can rapidly add up.
